Snowmobiling
on glaciers is a once-in-a-lifetime experience which is becoming
an increasingly popular sightseeing attraction - and travellers
may even choose between being passenger or driver. Snowcat tours
are also available. Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe,
is the country's main snowmobiling attraction, offering the greatest
choice of routes and sights. Package tours are available, including
either flights from Reykjavík to Höfn in southeast Iceland, or
a coach trip to the glacier. Boat cruises among icebergs on the
glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón may be included in the same tour. Other
glacier-tour operators arrange trips to the glaciers Mýrdalsjškull
in the south, Langjökull near the western interior and Snæfellsjökull
on the western tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Glacier touring
involves a certain amount of risk thus travellers are encouraged
to follow the instructions of their guides in every detail.
