Árbæjarsafn - Reykjavík Museum was established in 1957 by the City of Reykjavík as an open-air museum to precerve and show selected old houses. The aim was to give the public an idea of the architecture and the lifestyle of the past.

Most of the houses at Árbæjarsafn are originally from the center of Reykjavík. The oldest house was built in 1820. Several houses dating from the 19th century have been furnished. Various workshops can be seen in many of the houses, such as workshop of a goldsmith and a printing press. Througout the summer elderly citizens will show old methods of work. Shops where sweets and souvenirs can be bought are inside the museum area.
