Public transportation is essential for those travellers who want to explore Iceland on their own. The Reykjavík Bus Centre (BSÍ) oversees all bus traffic in Iceland and BSÍ Travel, located on the BSÍ premises, has all the essential brochures and leaflets on touring by bus in Iceland.
The BSÍ Bus Terminal is the centre of all coach traffic in Iceland. It is also a terminal for all bus services in and out of Reykjavík and connections for scheduled coach routes throughout the country. Most long-distance coaches leave the BSÍ Bus Terminal between 08:00 and 09:00 in the morning and return to Reykjavík in the evening between 18:00 and 20:00. Many types of bus tours are offered.

City and town buses are operated throughout the country. Generally they start driving at 06:45 in the morning and continue until midnight on weekdays, Sundays and holidays from 10am until midnight. Buses are operated at 20-30 minute intervals throughout the year.
