| Norræna húsið hóf starfsemi sína
árið 1968 og er teiknað af hinum þekkta finnska arkitetki Alvar Aalto.Hlutverk þess
er að efla tengslin milli Íslands og annarra Norðurlanda á sem flestum sviðum. Innan
veggja hússins fer því fram fjölþætt starfsemi sem miðar að því að kynna okkur
Íslendingum það sem efst er á baugi hverju sinni í menningarlífi hinna
Norðurlandaþjóðanna. En Norræna húsinu ber einnig að kynna íslenska menningu
annars staðar á Norðurlöndum og er það gert m.a. með þátttöku í ýmiss konar
menningarkynningum. *Bókasafn Norræna hússin er öllum opið.Safnkosturinn er að mestu leyti nýjar, norræna fagur-og fagbókmenntir, bæði fyrir fullorðna og börn.Bókasafnið lánar út skáldsögur, fræðibækur,barnabækur og hljóðbækur einnig myndbönd, geisladiska, hljómplötur og nótur.Listlánadeild safnsins lánar út grafíkmyndir mest 3 myndir í einu. Barnahellirinn er ný deild í bókasafninu. Þar geta börn lesið,teiknað,horft á myndbönd og byggt úr legókubbum. *Í kaffistofu hússins er heitt á könnunni allan daginn og þar er á boðstólum úrval smárétta. Einnig er hægt að lesa dagblöð frá öllum Norðurlöndum eða bara notið frábærs útsýnis yfir miðbæ Reykjavíkur og Tjörnina. *Í sýningarsölum í kjallara hússins og í anddyri eru jafnan í gangi sýningar af ýmsu tagi. *Í samkomusal hússins eru haldnir fyrirlestrar, tónleikar, fundir og fleira. | Nordens hus i Reykjavík invigdes 1968. Det är ritad av den
framstående finske arkitekten Alvar Aalto och beläget i centrala Reykjavík med Islands
Universitet som närmaste granne. Nordens hus skall både stimulera det nordiska intresset
på Island och sprida isländska kulturströmningar till övriga Norden. En omfattande
program-, biblioteks- och utställningsverksamhet drivs i Nordens hus. Verksamheten leds
av en styrelse som utnämns av de nordiska regeringarnas kulturministrar. Driftkostnaden
bekostas av de fem nordiska länderna i förening via Nordiska ministerrådet, som också
tillsätter en direktör för fyra år i taget. Biblioteket ligger centralt i huset. Det innehåller ca 30.000 nordiska böcker på originalspråk, både skönlitteratur och facklitteratur. I biblioteket finns också nordisk musik, artotek och videotek. Husets cafeteria bjuder på ett rikt urval av smårätter och isländska specialiteter. Där finns också dagstidningar som varje dag kommer med flyg till Island. Utställningssalen i källaren är platsen för många förnämliga konstutställningar. Konst- och informationsutställningar ordnas även i husets foajé och ibland i biblioteket. NORDENS HUS

| The Nordic House in Reykjavík opened in
1968 with the principal aim of strengthening ties between Iceland and the other Nordic
countries. It was designed by Alvar Aalto, the distinguished Finnish architect, and is
located a short distance from the centre of Reykjavík. Its nearest neighbour is the
University of Iceland. From the beginning the House has played an important part in Nordic
cultural activities and the cultural life of Iceland. The Nordic House performs a dual role; it seeks to stimulate and strenghten Icelandic interest in the culture of the other Nordic countries while relaying back to those countries Icelandic cultural currents through comprehensive programmes, library activities and exhibitions. The activities are overseen by the Nordic House committee, which is appointed by the Ministers of Culture of the Nordic countries. The cost of operations is paid jointly by the Nordic governments, through the Nordic Council of Ministers, who also appoint the director for a four year term of office. The heart of the house is the library, which holds some 30,000 Nordic books, both literary and vocational, in the original language. The library contains a music section with Nordic works, an art lending section, Video-and CD section. The Nordic House cafeteria has a wide selection of cakes, sandwiches, hot and cold dishes and Icelandic specialities. Visitors may read newspapers, which are brought daily by air from the other Nordic countries. Nordic magazines too are available in the library. Exhibitions of the arts and crafts of Nordic countries are held in the large exhibition hall, in the basement of the House.
