Stöðvarfjörður is a village on the northern side of the fjord by the same name. Trade started there in 1896, the village developed at the turn of the century. The main occupation in Stöðvarfjörður, has always been fishing. An innovative form of pisciculture is practiced in the fjord: the feeding of cod. The area is renowned for its natural beauty. 

Many rare and peculiar types of stones and minerals are to be found, examples of which can be observed in the rock collection of Petra Sveinsdóttir.  

A hike to Steðjinn is a pleasant walk from the village takes about an hour.  Stöðvarskarð is a mountain pass between Stöðvarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður, this walk is particularly beautiful and takes only 4-5 hours.  

Súlurnar is a basalt peak divided at the top into two giant columns. This is one of the most picturesque mountains in Iceland.
