Welcome to Varmahlíð

On the crossroads at the foot of Vatnskarð pass, a commercial centre and an important traffic junction point. Varmahlið stands high on the western side of the valley. The village is situated at one of the major low-temperature lines in Iceland. There is an educational centre for the surrounding area, there is a very good swimming pool with sauna and solarium, a camping site and a horse rental. Varmahlíð lies on the National Road no 1 and has the Tourist Information Centre for the area. There is also a supermarket, a bank,a post office, two hotels and a community centre. There is an easy walk up to the top of the hill Reykjarhóll, which offers a good lookout point, with a pleasant stroll through the woods, owned by the Forestry Department. The varied wildlife of the region can be appreciated indoors at leisure in the Natural History Museum at Varmahlíð. The treasures to be found among the churches of Skagafjörður are as varied as they are numerous and each is worth a visit in its own right. Near Varmahlíð stands the turf roofed church at Víðimýri, built in 1834 home to a magnificent altarpiece dating from 1727 and described as " one of the purest, most beautiful examples of Icelandic architecture in existence."
