Álftanes
This district is primarily a residential community, situated on the furthest edge of the Álftanes peninsula.
There are fine mountain views from many points in this district, as well as a view of Reykjavík across the bay. The beaches along the indented coastline are abundant with shore birds and make for interesting walks. Bessastaðahreppur (Álftanes) is also an important resting and feeding area for migratory waterfowl.
The Bessastaðir Manor Farm is Iceland´s official presidential residence. The manor´s main stone structure was built in 1766 but has since undergone extensive renovation. Iceland´s head of state is a president elected by popular vote who remains in office for a four-year term. Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was elected President of Iceland in 1996.
At the Manor there is a thick-walled stone church, which dates back to 1777 and which is open to visitors. Its stained glass windows pay homage to events and personages in the country's religious history.
