Búðardalur

Búðardalur is the centre for the Dalabyggð community. Dalabyggð is an ideal place for hikers and all nature lovers, in summer and winter alike. The peace and quiet and the endless calm of the countryside is the main characteristic of the community. The land is a farmer´s land and the community is one of very few communities in Iceland depending manly on farming and service. Travellers with own transport will find a wide choice of routes to explore both within the region and in the neighbouring districts of Borgarfjörður, Snæfellsnes and Reykhólasveit.

This is the Saga country, the setting for several of the medieval epics and the home of the famous discoverer of America, Leifur Eiriksson who was born at Eiriksstaðir, in the Haukadalur valley.

The community centre Búðardalur lies on the east shore of the Hvammsfjörður. A trading and service centre for the farming area around it. There is a guesthouse, a restaurant, a campsite, a health care centre, a garage, bank- and postal services and a tourist information centre. At Laugar hotel Edda operates during the summer. The regional museum of Dalir district is also in Laugar. Few angling areas in Iceland can match the beauty and variety of Dalabyggð. Salmon and trout abound in many lakes and rivers. The variety of nature and the endless possibilities of enjoying it are the main characteristics of Dalabyggð.
