Hellissandur a busy fishing village stands on the edge of the sea on an elevated coastal plateau near the outermost tip of the peninsula adjacent to another seaside fishing village Rif that faces the open sea. In medieval times, Rif was an important trading port that was later choked up with silt. Now drained and protective moles built for a save harbour. Just outside Rif is the largest colony of Arctic terns in the country. Near Hellissandur is Gufuskálar with the 412 meters high antennas former carrying antennas of Loran, and long range navigational radio beacon, the buildings connecting to it now houses a training campus for rescue teams in the country. The new community Snæfellsbær has its main offices in Hellissandur. The guesthouse Gimli provides accommodation, meals, arrange meetings and a wide range of leisure activities.
