Art and Crafts from Iceland

Iceland's cultural scene is incredibly vibrant and this is reflected in its arts and crafts. Astonishingly beautiful pieces metamorphose out of very diverse materials such as glass, clay, fish skin, wood, silk and wool. Not to mention clothes hangers made from bleached and sanded-down buffalo ribs, wall lamps made from the huge cardboard cylinders used to transport WC paper into the country, furniture made from richly-textured driftwood and a ball gown made from tanned sheep's stomachs.

Artists' and artisan's studios are dotted throughout the cities and towns. Many of them are open to the public and sometimes also double as sales outlets. Groups of artisans have also banded together and formed co-op shops in which they take turns working; here the decor is often as innovative as the pieces on offer. Finally, considering the quality of the craftsmanship displayed, prices are highly competitive indeed.
