Bringing your own vehicle to Iceland
Shipping a private vehicle to Iceland is possible through Eimskip or the Smyril line. Eimskip sails to Reykjavík and other harbours in Iceland while the Smyril Line sails only to Seyðisfjörður. Temporary duty-free importation of motor vehicles to Iceland is limited to the following conditions:
- The vehicle must be registered outside Iceland and the importer must be the registered owner of the vehicle or have other legal possession of it, such as having hired the vehicle.
- The importer of a vehicle must have been domiciled outside Iceland for at least the previous twelve months.
- Himself, his spouse, or hired chauffeur must be the sole drivers of the vehicle.
- The vehicle must not be sold, lent, hired or used for any kind of transportation in return for payment, or used professionally in any other way while in Iceland.
- The importer must either re-export the vehicle or pay the import charges stipulated by law before the allotted time period expires.
- The importer of the vehicle must submit to customs officials an insurance certificate for driving in Iceland, either an Icelandic vehicle insurance certificate or an international insurance certificate for vehicles (Green Card), valid for Iceland.
- The customs officials at the port of entry must be authorized to allow the temporary duty-free importation of vehicles.
- For a vehicle that runs on fuel other than gasoline a weight tax must be paid, in accordance with regulations. These stipulate a certain sum for each week begun while the vehicle is in Iceland.
- No tariffs need be paid on cars which run on gasoline, upon arrival in Iceland.
