Hotels, guesthouses, and youth hostels may be found throughout the country. Country hotels in Iceland tend to be small and simple, though there are exceptions. They can be counted on to be clean and tidy. In addition to independently owned hotels, there are various hotel chains operating throughout the country. Icelandair Hotels, Edda hotel chain, Foss hotel, Circle hotels and All Season hotels, and Key hotels to name a few. Most serve as school dormitories in winter and double as tourist accommodation in the summer. The chain hotels, guarantee a certain standard in facilities and service.

"Farm Holidays" offer lodging with private families on more than one hundred farms across the country. This is a great way to get a real feel for the countryside.

There are now about 30 Youth Hostels in Iceland, varying from new hostels with modern facilities to charming old renovated houses.

Camping is a popular summer activity with Icelanders and tourists alike. There are about 117 camping sites throughout the country, all of which meet the approved standards of the National Camping Site Association.
