Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in Iceland

Scuba diving and snorkeling might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Iceland.

You may be surprised to hear that Iceland has some of the worlds greatest and unique dive sites.

On top of the list is Silfra in lake Thingvellir, located in the National Park Thinvellir which is a Unesco World Heritage site.

The Silfra ravine is a fissure created by the continental drift of the Eurasian and American tectonical plates.
The ravine is fed with glacial water through underground wells, that has been travelling through lava fields for decades and is therefore as clear as water can be.
So, when you get into the water, you are literally diving or snorkeling between two continents. The water in this fantastic underwater landscape made of steep rock walls is most likely the clearest you will ever dive in. Visibility is 100m plus.

But Silfra is not the only unique and stunning dive site in Iceland. The ocean is full of life.
Strýtan the geothermal chimney in the Fjord Eyjarfjörður is another example of fantastic diving.
During the last 10.000 years hot springs at the bottom of the 70 meter deep ocean have created a 55 meter high chimney that can be dived from a boat.
